Factors that affect safe driving:
Some of the biggest factors that can affect safe driving during Florida hurricane season are evacuation traffic on major highways, storm weather, high winds, tornadoes and heavy rain. Even a category 1 hurricane can produce winds of 74-95 mph. These winds can snap branches and topple trees. The safest option is to stay off the roads. However, if you must drive in these conditions, make sure to leave as early as possible. Giving yourself plenty of time to avoid the worst of the storm, make stops and drive at a safe speed. Driving at a slower speed is extremely important during these weather conditions. Make sure to increase your driving distance during these times and keep yourself updated at all times while driving to avoid flooded roads, dangerous weather conditions, hail and/or tornadoes.
Prepare your car for hurricane season:
- Keep a flashlight and extra batteries in your car
- Keep road flares or reflector in your vehicle
- Make sure your light housings are free from debris and clear
- Keep a first aid kit in your vehicle
- Pack non perishable snacks, drinking water, a cell phone and charger
- Make sure you have jumper cables in your vehicle
- Make sure your spare tire is properly inflated and that you have tools for changing it.
